Racing to consumer wellness

\\ Mission

The Mission of Pleiad Racing is to create commercial, educational and emotional value for all of its stakeholders. By fielding a successful ocean racing team around the Atlantic Basin Pleiad blends commerce, education and sport into a wellness nexus that promotes personal and planetary vitality.

\\ Strategy

Trans-Oceanic sailboat racing is a sport that reflects the values of initiative; innovation and environmental stewardship. Sailing, like other boutique sports will enjoy rapidly growing exposure in coming years as a result of exploding opportunity through digital media. This exposure creates opportunity for brand association; corporate education; and customer affinity programs.

\\ Leadership

Ed Cesare leads Pleiad Racing. He has competed successfully in numerous oceanic, offshore and inshore events at the grand prix level. He is the principal partner of Plead Capital Management, a venture capital firm focusing on consumer wellness. He is a frequent speaker on ocean racing navigation, meteorology and tactics. Ed is also a rabid sports fan. His years of successful business experience, his sailing career and his passion for sport position him well to lead the team and build value for sponsors.

A Look At the Action

In 2013 Pleiad Racing competed in the Atlantic Cup, the premier event in North America for Class40s. The AC combines both the double-handed discipline and fully crewed racing. Pleiad will compete in the 2014 edition in May. The event will cover three cities: Charleston SC, New York and Newport RI. There are 20 international teams expected. In 2013 the event enjoyed over 28 million impressions from print, radio, online and social media.

"Sailing with Pleiad has been very rewarding. The physical and mental challenges of racing double-handed make this segment of the sport one of the toughest. Our ethos of racing in an environmentally sensitive manner makes our connection to the ocean and environment very strong and it's great to be an ambassador for that message."

The Class 40

Pleiad Racing’s first platform and arena is the Class 40.

Class 40s are forty foot sailboats oriented to oceanic racing. The Class holds events that are both fully crewed, featuring traditional teamwork; and double-handed (two sailors). The latter format, so called “short-handed” sailing emphasizes perseverance and self-reliance.

The original goal of the class was to make offshore races accessible to amateur sailors. The success of the class has moved it beyond these parameters, with more and more professional sailors attracted to it.
